It’s easy to forget as a glutton and someone with a little disposable income that for families, the summer holidays can be an incredible drain on resources.

For families who rely on the free lunch offered by schools across the country, the six weeks without that can be a struggle. Having to find the money for 3 balanced meals a day for their children when things like childcare become an expensive extra becomes a game of eeking out cupboard staples, relying on cheap and often not very nutritious ingredients and even in some cases, parents going without completely.

It may be easy to wax lyrical about why this has been allowed to happen in one of the ten richest countries in the world, but I’m not going to do that. Instead, I want to shine a light on people making a difference and attempting to ease the pressure on vulnerable families and keep kids healthy and full.

Fareshare is a charity that focuses on excess food redistribution and works with charities, schools and community hubs across the Southwest to share food that is perfectly safe and good to eat but would ordinarily be dumped by supermarkets and distributors.

To help raise money to keep this amazing work going and help to expand to help as many families as possible, nine local restaurants and cafes have created a “green dish” where a portion of the proceeds go straight to Fareshare. Have a look below for the list of where you can help, just by having a decent bit of scran. Also, don’t forget to use the hashtag #ActiveAteBristol if you love your social media to help spread the word!
